Why do some people say that christians ard Brainwashed ?

What is the definition of brainwashing ? How does it work ? How do you explain that people who have never heard about jesus become true devoted christians ? ( don't tell me that they have been brainwashed by the missionaries , lots of missionaries have been killed to spread the word ) , what are your thoughts ?
