Why do baseball umpires swing their arms to the side when calling a strikeout?

Ive followed baseball all my life, but never gave this much thought. Everytime an ump calls a strike, he points to the side, and everytime he calls a strikeout the do this whole arm motion, just curious as to how that originated..........
