Why were the Spice Girls so harshly criticized?

They are really corny imo. And not all disliked them a lot of people actually LOVED them. but I guess just like Rebecca Black or Justin Beiber the spice girls has alot of lovers but way more haters which is a quite normal thing for popular artists.
